This summer and fall, the Berklee Popular Music Institute (BPMI) is sending five up-and-coming artists from the college to perform at six popular music festivals across North America. The institute’s BPMI Live course guides students through every step of going from the classroom to the stage, serving as important preparation for a career in live music, whether as a performer or an industry professional.
Throughout the academic year, students in BPMI’s A&R group reviewed hundreds of artist submissions and narrowed the field through a combination of factors that included recordings, videos, and social media presence. The A&R group also considered the artist’s style of music for genre-specific festivals such as Inkcarceration (metal) and Faster Horses (country).
This year’s artists include pop/R&B singer Aiida, performing at Lollapalooza in Chicago, Illinois (July 28–31); hip-hop duo Awfbeat, performing at Music Midtown in Atlanta, Georgia (September 17–18); soul-pop and R&B artist Brandon Harris, performing at Osheaga in Montreal, Canada (July 29–31); rock, country, and disco artist CHARLEY, performing at Faster Horses in Brooklyn, Michigan (July 22–24), and Sound on Sound in Bridgeport, Connecticut (September 24–25); and folk/pop artist Matilda Marigolds, performing at Bourbon & Beyond in Louisville, Kentucky (September 15–18).
Berklee’s Music Therapy Department has long been a hub of research, training, and innovation in the field. Music therapy majors have access to world-class training from leading experts, and through the Music and Health Institute, they can participate in and learn from the latest research and innovative therapeutic approaches.
With the creation of the new Center for Music Therapy, the department aims to help deliver life-changing music therapy services throughout Berklee’s own backyard and to give music therapy students practical, hands-on training in the process.
Designed to serve as a training ground for students in the major, the center will focus on delivering music therapy services to under-resourced communities in the Greater Boston area.
Leading this new initiative is Cynthia Koskela, the center’s inaugural clinical director. A 2013 graduate of Berklee’s music therapy undergraduate program, Koskela returns to Berklee with years of leadership experience in music therapy and a graduate degree in human development and psychology from Harvard University.
She will be responsible for working with local healthcare and community organizations to develop and expand music therapy services and training that strengthens communities, promotes social change, and improves the quality of life, with a particular focus on communities that are often overlooked and underserved.
The 74th Prime Time Emmy Awards will be held Monday, September 12.
