Since we’re all stuck indoors, now is the perfect time to expand your musical vocabulary, starting with some local Birmingham hip-hop artists! We’ve put together a list of seven artists to get you started—are any familiar?

FYI, some of these songs have explicit lyrics.

Born and raised in Birmingham, Luh Soldier has been one of Alabama’s rising hip-hop stars since 2018. He recently signed to Cinematic Music Group to help further his vision of putting Alabama hip-hop on the map.

2. Shaheed & DJ Supreme

If you’re into old-school hip-hop, Shaheed and DJ Supreme are for you. Since the early 2000s, Shaheed and DJ Supreme have been forging their own sound in Birmingham—performing at venues like Zydeco and The Nick.

3. Northside Weezy

I was introduced to Northside Weezy’s music through a close friend of mine, and through Northside Weezy I fell in love with Birmingham’s hip-hop. As his rap moniker suggest, he grew up on the north-side of Birmingham, and his music reflects the struggles he dealt with growing up there.

4. Gucci Mane

Did you know that superstar Gucci Mane is originally from Bessemer? Gucci Mane rose to fame in the early 2000s with his debut album “Trap House.” In 2018, Gucci Mane returned to Birmingham as the post-game performer of the Magic City Classic.

5. YBN Nahmir

Born and raised in Birmingham, YBN Nahmir became an overnight sensation in 2017 when his single “Rubbin Off The Paint” launched on WorldStarHipHop. After the success of the song, he was pulled out of classes at Clay-Chalkville High due to his popularity, and forced to take online classes. Since then, YBN Nahmir has dropped several albums and toured with the likes of Gucci Mane and Machine Gun Kelly.

6. The Bachelor Dion

The Bachelor Dion has been picking up steam, performing at local music venues in Birmingham. In fact, he just received word that he is officially nominated for the 6th Annual Alabama Music Awards!
